How many penalties have Messi and Ronaldo missed in the last five years?

The two superstars are arguably the greatest players in the history of the game - but how do they fare from the penalty spot?

Cristiano Ronaldo passed up the opportunity to give Juventus a vital three points in the Serie Atitle race this week when he limply missed from the penalty spot against Atalanta.

Despite his confident-as-ever run-up, his weak effort was saved by goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

That was Ronaldo's third penalty miss of 2020, having previously failed to convert spot kicks against Sampdoria in Serie A in July and versus Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final back in June.

The last period in which he missed three penalties went over a two-season period from 2017/18 to 2018/19.

Looking back over the last five seasons in all competitions, Ronaldo has missed nine penalties in total.

In that same period, he has scored 47.

For Lionel Messi's last missed penalty you have to go back to November of 2019 when he failed to score from the spot in a friendly between Argentina and Brazil.

In a competitive fixture, the last penalty missed came in February of 2019 against Real Valladolid in La Liga.

Over the last five seasons in all competitions, Messi has missed seven penalties, and scored 32.

In the year 2020, so far, Ronaldo has scored 17 penalties, while Messi has scored nine.
